The District of Rupnagar is also known as District Ropar and is situated in Punjab State of Northwestern India. It is 2056 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in the Northwest, District Ludhiana in the West, District Fatehgarh Sahib in the Southwest, District SAS Nagar in the South, Districts Una and Solan of Himachal Pradesh State in the North and District Bilaspur of Himachal pradesh State in the Northeast. The City of Ropar is the headquarter of this District.
The District of Rupnagar was founded by Raja Rokeshar in the 11th Century who named it after his son Rup Sen. This District is famous for many Historical Gurdwaras which are in the memory of the armed struggle of Tenth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji against the injustice and atrocities of the Mughal rulers of that Era.

Thara Sahib, a half metre high, square platform (five by five metres), paved in marble, stands in the open space in front of Damdama Sahib. It was placed to mark the site where Guru Tegh Bahadur received the group of Kashmiri Pandits who called on him in 1675.
