Gurudwara Sri Jyoti Saroop Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib
Gurudwara Sri Jyoti Saroop Sahib is situated in the district town Fathegarh Sahib. It is situated on the fathegarh Mohali road. It is about a mile to the east of Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib. The road connecting the two Gurudwara Sahibs is diwan todar mal marg, it was on the spot where Gurudwara jyoti saroop Sahib now stands that Mata Gujri ji, Sahibzada zorawar Singh and Sahibzada fateh Singh were cremated. Because of fear of wazir khan played the owners of land around sirhind refused to sell todar mall a piece of land for performing the last rites (cremation) of Guru Sahib's family members. But seeing an opportunity to make a small fortune one farmer agreed to sell todar mall only enough land on which to perform the last rites of Mata ji and the Sahibzadas. Finally an agreement was made to secure the tiny bit of land. Todar mall had to literally 'carpet' the piece of ground in vertically standing gold coins.
Gurdwara Sri Jyoti Saroop Sahib lies about 1.6 km (1 mile) from Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib. On 27th December 1705, the Sahibzadas were slain after the attempt at bricking them alive in the foundation of the wall failed. Mata Gujri Ji also breathed her last.
At this place, the mortal remains of Mata Gujri (the mother of Guru Gobind Singh), Sahibzada Fateh Singh and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh (Guru Gobind Singh's young sons) were cremated. Wazir Khan, the Faujidar or Governor of Sirhind, refused to allow the cremation of the bodies unless the land for the cremation was purchased by laying gold coins on it.
Todar Mal purchased this piece of land by offering the gold coins as demanded and thereby etched his name in the annals of Sikh history and earned the title "Diwan". Diwan Todar Mall of Sirhind performed the cremation. He told Baba Mehra Ji to arrange a cart of chandan wood (sandalwood), which Baba Mehra brought from the forests of Atta Ali.
