In the late 1980's, the Gurdwara Sahib Guru Khalsa Sabha Sembawang (later known as Sembawang Sikh Temple) and the Gurdwara Sahib Jalan Kayu were served notices by the Government to vacate their premises for reDevelopment, In 1991, a parcel of leasehold land (30 years lease) was offered for sale by the Government for the construction of the new Gurdwara Sahib. Both the Gurdwara Sahibs were then merged leading to the establishment of the new Gurdwara Sahib Yishun.
Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Homes Affairs and Member of Parliament for Sembawang laid the foundation stone of the new temple, on 17th October 1993. Sardar Kartar Singh Thakral officiated at the opening ceremony of the Gurdwara Sahib on 27th August 1995. The Gurdwara Sahib comprises of a modest but functional two-storey building. The ground floor includes the Guru Ka Langgar hall and kitchen and accommodation facilities for the Granthis. The first floor comprises of the Darbar Sahib, the Sach Khand, a library cum meeting room and an office.
There are about 150 Sikh families residing in Yishun and the surrounding areas who patronise this Gurdwara Sahib. Besides religious functions, the other activities that are organised by this Gurdwara Sahib include the annual family day (held in conjunction with the Gurdwara Sahib's anniversary), participation in Sarbat Da Bhalla day, road relay, organised by the Singapore Sikh Welfare Council and hosting of visits by schools and other communities to support and promote racial harmony in Singapore.
Asa Di War Kirtan is conducted from 6.45a.m. to 7.45a.m. The normal prayers are held every Sunday morning. The katha (recital) of the Suraj Prakash and prayers are held on every Thursday from 6.00p.m. to 8.00p.m. In addition, Sangrand and Pooranmassi (day of the full moon) programmes are conducted monthly.
