In the 1930's, there were a few Sikhs in Segamat who served in the Police Force. Some of the later Sikh arrivals worked as watchmen or went into business. On 1st March 1932, these Sikhs converted a shop house, located on the main road in Segamat town, into their first Gurdwara Sahib. The first Granthi at this Gurdwara Sahib was Giani Tara Singh.
In 1938 the Sikhs obtained a piece of land measuring about 10,000 square feet in Jalan Hassan. The Sikhs gave donations to construct the new Gurdwara Sahib. Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji of Malacca laid the foundation stone. The Gurdwara building was completed in late 1938 at a cost of Straits Settlements $18,000.00 and declared open by Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji on 30th January 1939.
There are two old shop houses in Segamat town, which belong to the Gurdwara Sahib. The rental from these shops is used to upkeep the Gurdwara.
In 1984 the Gurdwara Sahib was extensively repaired. The Johor State Government donated RM15,000.00 for this purpose and the Sikh sangat also donated generously.
Most of the Sikhs in Segamat have moved to other towns. There are presently about 35 Sikh families who participate in the religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib.
The Management Committee comprises of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and their assistants and four committee members. At present there are four appointed trustees to manage the affairs of the Gurdwara Sahib i.e. Sardar Mohan Singh Randhawa, Dr. Sapuran Singh Rai, Sardar Makhan Singh and Sardar Jagjit Singh.
Bhai Gurdial Singh Ji served as a Granthi Sahib in this Gurdwara for about 31 years from 1939 to 1958 and 1967 to 1979. Giani Gian Singh Ji Village Amargarh, Bhatinda served as a Granthi Sahib in this Gurdwara for nearly 9 years from 1959 to 1967.
