Around 1920, the first Gurdwara Sahib building was built on the present site by Sikhs residing in Alor Star, most of whom were employed in the Police Force. This building was erected on concrete pillars and had wooden walls with a tiled roof. The langgar hall was a single storey wooden structure with an attap roof. This Gurdwara building fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1965 to make way for a new, larger building.

The foundation stone of the new Gurdwara building was laid on 27th July 1966 by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kedah, DYMM Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'azzam Shah ibni Almarhom Sultan Badlishah.

The new Gurdwara Sahib building was officially declared open by YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, on 3' February 1968.
There are approximately 22 students who participate in Gurmukhi classes, which are held in the evenings from Monday to Thursday i.e. 4 times a week.
The Management Committee comprises of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and their assistants as well as seven committee members.
The present Trustees of the Gurdwara Sahib are Sardar Phag Singh Grewal, Sardar Hariharan Singh Dhaliwal and Sardar Amolak Singh.
This Gurdwara Sahib has two large rooms for Sikh visitors, which can accommodate up to eight persons.

The longest serving Granthi in this Gurdwara Sahib was Giani Maghar Singh Ji who served for about 9 years from 1978 until his passing away in 1987.

There are presently about 80 Sikh families who participate in the Sikh religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib.

The normal weekly prayers are held every Friday morning from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
