It is surrounded by Districts Rupnagar, SAS Nagar and Fatehgarh Sahib and State Capital Chandigarh in the North, District Sangrur in the West, Districts Kurukshetra and Ambala of State Haryana in the East and District Kaithal of State Haryana in the South. The City of Patiala is the headquarter of this District.
The District of Patiala was founded by Baba Ala Singh in 1763, when he laid the foundation stone of Patiala Fort known as Qila Mubarak. Litterly, Pati means Land and Ala means of Baba Ala Singh, So Patiala means Land of Baba Ala Singh. District Patiala is one of the erstwhile Princely Cities of Punjab. Patiala is famous for its Turban, Patiala-Shahi Salwar, Punjabi Jutti (Punjabi Shoes) and Patiala Peg ( a double peg of Whisky).
