The District of Jalandhar is situated in Punjab State of Northwestern India. It is 2634 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Ludhiana in the East, District Hoshiarpur in the North, District Ferozepur in the South and District Kapurthala in the West. The City of Jalandhar is the headquarter of this District.
This District has got its name from a Demon King Jullandhar who used to rule over this area in ‘Satyuga’ , a fact mentioned in ‘Puranas’ and ‘Mahabharata’. The Demon was ultimately killed by Lord Shiva to relieve people of their sufferings. According to another Legend, Jalandhar was the Capital of the Kingdom of Luv, Son of Lord Rama, a fact mentioned in ‘Ramayana’. Literally, Jalandhar means area inside water because this District lies between Rivers Sutlej , Ravi and Beas.
Jalandhar District is famous for manufacturing sports goods and it is the biggest supplier of Sports materials in the Country. An International Sports Market is situated in Jalandhar. This District is also famous for Hospitals. It has maximum number of Hospitals in Asia. Jalandhar was the Capital of Punjab from 1947 until Chandigarh was built in 1953.
